It’s been so long time I didn’t write a post. Actually, I had a plan to write my story from 1979 to 2010 in order but after 3 years trying, I realized that it was a quite impossible mission.
So I decided to write whatever I feel like from now. :P

Today, I’m gonna talk about handmade paper.
I had a lot of used A4 papers and it’s always quite sad throwing them away. So, I decided to make handmade paper with them. The method is simple but long.

First Day

1. Put used A4 papers in the water for 1 night.
2. Well, simple white handmade paper is also pretty. But the main advantage of handmade paper is that we can put in it whatever we like. This time, I wanted to have papers which have red petals and the green stems on it. So I chose carrot stem because I could get them for free at the weekend veggie market. But if you want to try home, it’s not necessary to use carrot stem. It could be corn leaves or grass on the road. But we should treat them in special way before use it not to let chlorophyll stain our paper all yellow. Firstly, cut the stem about 2.5cm long and leave in the water for a night.

Second Day

1. Crush the wet papers from yesterday with mixer till it becomes like porridge.

2.

   Boil the stem from yesterday with Alkaline liquid for 2 hours.

   *Alkaline liquid : In traditional way, we used to put the ashes in the water for a day then the water became alkaline liquid (pH 10~12). But we replace it to sodium hydroxide (which we use for handmade soap) or baking soda which doesn’t include acid. But if you cannot fine any of these, at least put the soap water. (not neutral soap but normal old style soap)

   If the stems become very soft, wash it with cold water many times to remove the alkali and crush it with mixer as much as you want.

3.

   If you have dried petals, put them in the hot water for 5 min and replace with new hot water. Repeat this till the water color doesn’t change anymore.

   I used Dahlia petals for this. I went to biking with KiKi to the field a few weeks ago and we found a beautiful Dahlia field. There was a panel which said ‘5 CHF for 1 bouquet, self-service’. Oh my gosh, how many flowers could be a bouquet? I chew over the sentence more than 10 min. However, if somebody believe you, you become good. That’s power of trust! I could pick the flowers until I cannot hold in my arm anymore but finally, I brought only one flower per color. They were still full of my backpack because the flower was huge like a sunflower :) They were shiny on my table for many days and it is useful even when it’s dead. How lovely they are !

4.

   Put the crushed paper, stem and flower in the big tub with a lot of cold water and mix them well. If you want some pearly paper, you can put pearl ink for textile usage on this step.

5. Ladle out the paper and plant from the tub with a net. The paper should spread equally everywhere on the net and ticker than you want to have to obtain the right thickness after pressing. * net : Cover oil painting canvas frame or photo frame with mosquito net. (left photo)

6. Put the paper on a piece of cloth gently and put another piece of textile on it and a paper. You can stack about 40 layers. If you use textile with special embossing pattern or frame with different form, it will give a style on your paper.

7.

   Put some heavy stuff on the stack of paper and cloth. It will help to make the strong papers.

Third day

1. The papers from yesterday would stick well on the cloth. Hang them to dry.

Forth day

1. If you like natural style, use the paper as it is or if you like well plated papers, put a piece of cloth on it and after wetting them with water spray, iron them. If you want to print something on it, you should iron it first. Try to print something on it, it’s super pretty!

오랜만에 글쓰네.

사실은 내가 태어난 날부터 차곡 차곡 한해 한해 정리해 가며 쓰고 싶었는데, 그게 생각 보다 쉽지 않은 일임을 3년만에 깨닳고, 그냥 오늘 부터 닥치는 대로 쓰기로 했다.

자~ 오늘은 수제지 만들기에 대해서 얘기해 볼까?

얼마전 집에 굴러다니는 양질의 폐지가 넘 아까워서 직접 수제지를 만들어 보기로 했다.

만드는 방법은 간단하면서도 과정이 많아서 조금 귀찮다.

첫째날

1. 일단 집에 굴러다니는 복사지들을 한데 모아 물에 하루 저녁정도 불러둔다.
2.  결이 울퉁 불퉁한 흰 수제지도 이쁘지만 기왕면 수제지의 강점이 무엇인가, 바로 내 맘대로 다 넣을 수 있다는것 아니겠는가. 나는 파란 줄기에 꽃잎이 사뿐히 내려 앉은 수제지를 만들고 싶었으므로 주말 야채시장에서 공짜로 마구 구해 올 수 있는 싱싱한 당근 줄기를 선택했다. (읽고 집에서 해보고 싶은 사람은 꼭 당근줄기가 아니어도 된다. 길에 잔디를 뽑아와도 되고, 잡초를 뽑아와도 되고…) 당근 줄기를 그냥 잘라 넣으면 엽록소가 빠져나와 종이가 다 노란색이 되므로 끓여주어야 하는데, 그 전에 당근줄기를 2.5cm정도로 잘라서 하루 물에 담가 놓으면 더 다루기가 쉽다.

둘째날

1. 어제 불려둔 복사지를 믹서로 곱게 갈아 종이 죽을 만든다.
2. 어제 준비해둔 당근 줄기를 찬물과 함께 냄비에 넣고, 알칼리 용액을 넣어 2시간 정도 끓인다.잠깐? 여기서 알칼리 용액이 뭘까. 전통적인 방법으로는 나무탄 재를 우려둔 물을 사용했다고 하는데, 없으면 비누만들 때 쓰는 가성 소다를 넣으면 된다. 베이킹 소다(베이킹 파우더 말고!) 를 넣어도 되는데, 이도 저도 다 없으면 천연 비누나 빨래 비누 라도 녹여서 알칼리 용액을 만들어 넣어 준다. (중성 비누는 안되요~)
3. 줄기가 흐믈흐믈 해지면 알칼리 성분을 제거하기 위해 찬물로 여러번 행궈준 다음, 믹서로 맘에 드는 만큼 갈아준다.
4. 말려둔 꽃잎을 뜨거운 물에 담가 더이상 색이 빠지지 않을 때까지 우려낸다.난 얼마전 주말에 키키와 함께 들로 자전거를 타러 갔는데, 글쎄 달리아가 색색별로 가득 피어 있는 들판에 작은 통과 함께 ‘한부케에 5천원, 셀프서비스’라고 쓰여있는게 아닌가. 5천원을 통에 넣고, 한참을 ‘아~대체 한부케란 얼마만큼을 말하는걸까’로 심히 고민했는데, 결국 팔이 빠지게 다 꺾어 올 수도 있었지만 그리 자유를 주니 또 인간이 착해지는게 아니겠는가. 그것이 바로 신뢰의 힘. 색깔별로 잘 핀녀석으로 한송이 씩만 꺾어 왔다. 그래도 들판에서 싱싱하게 자란녀석들이라 달리아 한송이가 해바라기만큼 커서 한 배낭에 가득 찼다. 집에서도 여러날 내 식탁위를 행복하게 빛내주더니 지고 나서 까지 이리 유용하게 쓰이다니. 거참 이렇게 기특할수가~
5. 종이죽과 당근줄기, 꽃잎을 모두 큰 통에 붓고, 물을 잔뜩 넣어 잘 풀어 준다.
6. 뜰판으로 종이를 떠서 천위에 잘 안착시킨다. 이때 떠낸 종이가 어느정도 두툼한듯 해야 종이가 압착된 후에 원하는 두께를 얻을 수 있다. 뜰판은 못쓰는 액자나 유화용 캔버스등의 안쪽에 모기장같은 것을 씌워 종이를 물에서 떠 낼 수 있게 만든것을 말한다.
7. 종이위에 다른 천을 대고 또 종이를 새로 떠서 그 위에 안착시키기를 반복한 후 그 위에 무거운 것들을 잔뜩 올려놓아 떠낸 종이가 잘 압착되도록 한다. 이때 천의 결이 독특한 것을 쓰면 종이에 그대로 옮겨나와 스타일리쉬한 종이를 만들 수 있다.

셋째날

1.  어제 떠 놓은 종이가 천에 철썩 붙어 있을 것이다. 통채로 빨래 줄에 걸어 말려준다.

넷째날

1. 말린 종이를 천에서 떼어내서 종이의 구불 구불한 자연스러운 느낌 그대로 쓰던가, 난 그래도 빳빳한 종이가 좋다싶은 사람은 종이 위에 천을 대고, 분무기로 물을 조금 뿌려 다리미로 다려준다. 평평한 종이가 되므로 프린터로 무언가를 인쇄할 때 유리하다. 참고로 프린터로 수제지 위에 무언가를 찍어내면 뱃속이 간질 간질 할 정도로 스타일이 난다. >.< ㅋ

이것으로 수제기 만들기 끝~
